This was the first theme that we collaborated with using Google Wave. I’m not completely sold on it yet, but it has got potential. It certainly sped up the process. The Illustrator file is there for your use; use however you can. Joe came up with the concept and we had it designed and printed within 24 hours, so it felt kind of funny seeing idea to fruition so fast but it is a perfect image for where we are going with Advent this year. Here is the right up for the month.

When the teenage girl missed her period, all the world could do was wait.

Advent is the season of active waiting for Christ’s arrival. We intentionally relive and remind ourselves so as to not forget. We bare ourselves to the good news of the coming arrival permitting it re-order our lives and communities.

While there is an expectation for the culmination of prophesies and promises, at the same time there’s a raw humanity to it all: A teenage girl is expecting – morning sickness, cramps, unreasonable cravings. In her belly, a fetus develops in stages; In her belly she incubates hope. As Mary and Joseph sneak into Bethlehem under the stars, Jesus smuggles himself into humanity.

Amidst the busyness of the next few weeks, may our hearts and minds be in a place of expectancy for the one who has come to make all things new.

Each Easter Friday, Joe goes all out putting a service together than usually incorporates heavy imagery, liturgy and creative response. Today was no different. Today we followed a liturgy built by him, sang a few song, and then participated in the Eucharist together as a community. Below is the Powerpoint, which is basically the liturgy condensed down, if you want the full liturgy, you can download it as a word document below. The bread was nailed into the table, and when everyone came and ripped the bread through the nails, they carved their name on the table, a table in which we had carved ahead of time…We Were There.

Since Thinker Labs is no more, I’m going to start posting all future designs (and possibly past ones) online for people to use under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike License. Monthly we do a series at theStory and usually have some imagery that goes along with it and sometimes a film. We’ve always wanted to make it open and available for anyone to use.

Letters from the Future is all about some of the key judgment parables. The underlying idea is that if your future self could write your present self a letter then what would it say? These parables heavily weight on eschatology and how the kingdom of God plays out in the world.

“The One About the Fishing Net”
The catch of the day is always a mixed bag. How will our lives be sorted?
Read: Matthew 13:47-50

“The One About the Returning Boss”
What does it mean to live well during turbulent times?
Read: Matthew 24:45-51; Luke 12:42-46
