Rest for the Weary

Another night at 3AM, and I’m stressed out of my mind. Welcome to my life in the past 3 weeks. In about fifteen hours, all my responsibilities for this semester will have been completed. I have two exams left, and I’m not looking forward to either of them. As I was about to go to bed, and get the few hours of sleep that I do get during exam season, I decided I would read a bit. I came across this verse.

Matt 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

What a truth. What a promise to be able to rest when everything else is at unrest. It’s funny because even though I’m in the middle of a storm I feel at peace. Maybe Jesus doesn’t like to calm the storm all the time. Maybe when he was sleeping through the storm and the disciples were freaking out he was showing us something. Maybe he was annoyed that the disciples woke him up. He did point out their lack of faith. Even though the storm was raging, he was at peace, and he could still rest. I doubt he was talking about their lack of faith to rid of the storm. He mas probably talking about their lack of faith to be able to be at peace even though everything around them was out of their control. It’s true in all of our lives, sometimes he calms the storms, other times he doesn’t. It is in those times that we need to come to him and he will give us rest during the storm. When everything is out of control around us, knowing he is in control has to be enough to get us through it.

Cool Hand Luke has one of my favourite songs ever written, musically and lyrically. It’s actually called rest for the weary and it seems to be inspired by this verse and other verses.
